Formula Attempt #3

Alright, so last night was our third attempt at giving James some formula before bedtime. He drank it pretty well last night, but we still only gave him about an ounce and a half before I nursed him. He went down to bed at around 9:30pm, and slept until 3:30am - which is a fairly normal stretch for him. He was then up again at 6:00am. So... I don't really think that the formula did much to help him sleep longer, with the exception of that first night.

I was trying to give him the formula for two reasons. The first reason was that I was told it may help him sleep longer at night because the formula takes longer to digest. The second reason was to help him get used to the bottle so that we can get out every now and then. I will just pump milk though when we want to go out, because he seems to be taking the bottle just fine. I think we may try that out for the first time on Thursday, and leave him with my girlfriend to babysit. Ack! It freaks me out, but we'll never know if it works unless we try it right? I totally trust her - she has a two year-old son, and expecting #2 - but I'm scared for some reason. Why is that? Why can't us moms ever just let them go? I suppose that it is just a built-in instinct from God. Anyway, wish us luck... if we choose to go through with it!

It'll go great Heather! I still feel like you do when we go out. But then we're there and it's all good. I actually feel bad because sometimes I wind up having so much fun I forget I have a baby and then immediately feel bad when we head home like I shouldn't have been having such a good time - but we need to keep balanced so we can be the best moms we can be, so it's okay to be "just you" sometimes. Enjoy your night out!

Oh, and we haven't found that solids have helped Palmer much either with sleeping longer through the night - I think it just happens when they're ready.

It's good to get your child used to other people beside family now than later. Otherwise you will have a clingy child who is afraid of others. Is terril watching him? Where are you going on your date? Have you thought about baby days yet?
Remeber, Trev and I always willing too. :0)

I know what you mean... I worry about leaving Micah because he's such a Mama's boy and I'm always certain he'll freak out if I'm not around. But how will he learn if I never try right? And now, same thing with Keziah and the bottle. She always takes it eventually but sometimes I have to be quite persistent before she'll latch on and drink the whole thing. Why can't I trust that someone else could also get her to do the same??
Anyway, hope it goes well for you on Thursday! And I hope James gives you more of those 7-8 hour stretches!

Its different w/ each baby.
Caleb slept 7 hrs the 1st week he was born... and since then it only got better. He slept 10 hr stretches by a month old... talk about nice!
Taite on the other hand.. no such luck haha.

We maybe get 4 hrs. He is 6 weeks.
I actually tried giving Taite some cereal in his bottle the other night. Did it make him sleep longer? Nope...

It did make Caleb sleep longer though. So see each baby varies.
Taite digested the cereal fine BTW ;-) to all the worried moms.

I guess im in for little sleep for a while :-) oh well

Youtube. Works great. Easy and free. Get an account. Upload your video. Put it on your blog. So easy, my mom can do it.

And Heather. You can do it. You should do it. Even if it is just for little short stints at the beginning, it's good for all of you. Trust me, I'm a mommy who didn't and I regret it.

We tried Preston on a bottle at 1 month. We wanted to go out for valentines day, so he had no choice but to take the bottle! lol And after that we kept doing it like once a week or so to keep him used to it for when we wanted to go out. He never had any problems latching on or anything, it worked well for him. And after I had to quit nursing it was nice that he was fine to take a bottle.
We made sure and went out on little "dates" even if it was just for a walk...to keep our sanity! lol Sometimes that would fall over his eating time, and he did fine. James will do great when you leave him with your friend. It's a motherly thing to be freaked out the first time you leave them, but he'll do great and I hope you have fun!

Hi Heather! I stumbled on your blog by accident and wanted to say Hello. I don't know if you remember Colin and me (Shannon) from our Rainbow Company days at BBC? Anyway, it's been great to see what you're up to. Congratulations on your little guy. He is adorable! We'd love to hear from you and catch up. My email address is shannon@bendell.ca. Hope to hear from you soon!

Hi Heather, sounds like you're doing great! I hope that James gives you more 8 hr. nights. I asked my midwife if formula helps a baby sleep through the night. She said that a baby will sleep through the night when they're ready to. At the beginning their stomachs are so small, and they need to eat more often...and sometimes they're going through a growth spurt. He WILL sleep through the night! I'll remember to whisper up a prayer for James and you tonight at the same time I pray for Annika to sleep through the night. :)
