What's Up

Hey everyone - how are you? There hasn't been anything really going on around our place lately, but I thought I'd give you a little James update - those are always fun, aren't they?! James is doing great, but I've been playing detective lately, trying to find things to help with his eczema. The itching seems to now be waking him up at night (or so I have concluded), so he's been nursing up to three times a night. I know it's not that he's that hungry, because I've been loading him up before bed. First, he gets some rice cereal, then I nurse him, and then he gets some formula on top of that. He still wakes up after 3-4 hours after all of that, so it has to be something else waking him. So, I've now purchased some dye free/fragrance free Tide for his laundry. I've also bough some colloidal oatmeal bath, and some heavy duty dermatological moisturizer and I'm hoping all of this will help to relieve the itch, and help him to sleep. Other than that, he's active as ever, and happy as can be. He's getting cuter, and more fun every day - and we are just totally loving him!

Heather, he is seriously adorable. Seriously. That's it, that's all. Nothing left to say ... other than I hope his itch goes away!

eczema is often linked to a dairy allergy.. try taking him off all dairy (and you off as well, since you're nursing), and see if that helps. if it's not dairy, you can be 99% sure that it's some sort of food allergy.

Hey heather...hope you can find some solution to help the poor little guy out...Also, I was gonna ask you if you had tried Ivory Snow???? I know that that's what I used for my daughter when she was a baby and I'm using for this baby also....its a baby detergent, so I don't know if it would help or not/?/ worked for Taylor and she has exzema also??? Anyways, I hope you can figure out the solution, it is no fun when they are upset and we can't find the solution.

Like anonymous said, exzema is usually due to some kind of food allergy. Starting him on cereal this early could definately be part of the issue. Believe me, you don't want to accidently give your child a lifetime of allergies, just for a few hours of sleep.

Also, do you use fabric softener? I have really bad exzema, and I find that fabric softener makes me really itchy. I'd rather have clothes that aren't quite as soft. If you decide to go without fabric softener, there are these rubber balls that you can buy from Home Hardware, I think, that you put in the dryer to soften your clothes and take out the static.

Please don't take this as a rant against feeding solids at three months. I just feel really strongly about it because I have suffered with allergies and exzema so much, I don't want others to unknowinly suffer.

Hey Heath, the fabric softner advice is so good. I can't believe i forgot to tell you that one. I assume you know more than i do most of the time. I personally don't get any sleep either if i go somewhere and the sheets and/or towels have had fabric softner used. It's very common for babies to get eczema for a time and it usually disappears forever. There is so much contrasting advice on how diet affects it. We'll have to swap notes over the phone...
By the way, dieing over that gorgeous boy, what a sweetum!

Hey Heather. I have never had eczema, but have lived with a sister that had severe eczema. For years they tried things - prescription creams, not bathing too often, Aveeno in the bath, etc. She finally went to a herbalist when she was older, they linked it to pasteurized dairy products. She went off of that and voila! She is now a smooth-skinned beauty. It's a hard life change to make, but so worth it. Hope you find something that works.

Hey Heather. I know that we just talked about this yesterday - but I agree with the whole fabric softener thing. I never use it in Hayden's laundry - but occasionally I forget and add it to a load of my own laundry. As a result - Hayden gets a little red itchy patch on his cheek. Same thing if someone who is wearing a lot of purfume holds him. Poor little guy!
Also - about the cereal at three months thing. I know that there are two very opposing camps on this topic. Unless food allergies run in your family - I wouldn't worry about giving James a lifetime of allergies just because you gave him some cereal at this stage.
