Missing the Old Me

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Well, as this pregnancy draws nearer to the end I find myself longing to be back to the "old me". I know I probably won't be able to get into my pre-prego clothes right away, and life itself won't be the same as it was - but I am looking forward to being just me again. I have to say though that this has been an amazing pregnancy, and I don't know if it could have gone much better. I am still enjoying it, but now I am just so anxious to meet this little baby! I want to know WHO is in THERE! I want to know if we have a son or a daughter, and I want to see what they look like. I want to dress them, and bath them, and cuddle, and feed, and rock, and sing... and God-willing, sleep. In many ways it feels like this time is flying by, and then some days - like today - feel like the days are crawling. I dread being overdue! I would never wish anyone to be overdue!

Ryan and I went to see the Dr. again yesterday, and everything is looking good. I've been steadily gaining a pound a week (ick, thanks McCain cake), but my fundus measurement has remained the same since last week. All very normal. The baby's heart rate has been mostly 140, although last week it went to 150, and this week back to the usual 140. Everything else is just in waiting mode now. The baby has been head down for a few weeks, although my Dr. says that the term "dropped" is not a medical term - so I don't know if baby has "dropped". I don't waddle much when I walk yet, so maybe it isn't that low. I'm not sure. She seemed to suggest that she didn't think I would make it to my November 9th appointment - but we'll see. She says I should try to "surprise" her. Haha! We also have a hospital tour scheduled for the 9th - so we'll see if we can find our way if we don't make it to that. We didn't make it home from Winnipeg in time for the trick-or-treaters, so now I also have a whole box of mini chocolate bars calling to me from the pantry.

My bags are packed, baby's room is all ready to go, clothes and blankets are washed, car seat is ready to be installed, food is frozen in the freezer - what to do now, but wait? In the meantime, why don't we do a diaper survey. What kind of disposable diapers do you recommend and why? Would you use something different for a boy/girl?

Although I have no idea what it's like to wait for the arrival of a baby, I do know that you aren't off the mark when you say you're waiting to be "you" again. I mean, it's only natural to become anxious so close to the end to see your child. I don't think I've known a mother who wished that day would never come. You have had an amazing outlook on this pregnancy and I know a lot of people have really looked up to that. So hang in there a little longer and before you know it, you'll be looking down at your beautiful baby's face!

I don't know you but I can help answer your question! (I linked to your blog from alittlestone)

I used Pampers Swadlers at first. My baby was a few weeks early and they seemed to be a bit smaller than the Huggies Newborn diapers, so they fit better. But as he got bigger I switched to Huggies and have been using them ever since. Pampers has this powdery coating on them that I don't like. It also causes them to be scented.

Hope this helps and good luck!!

we tried Huggies,Pampers,Costco brand, and Superstore brand of diapers. Huggies won over Pampers for us. They smell too strong and didn't have the elasticity that Huggies do. Superstore brand is alright. Costco for Hannah soaked through quite easily. But each baby is so different.

For newborns... I really liked pampers swaddlers. You used to be able to even get them with a cut out for the tender little belly button, but I haven't seen those in a while. (Plus they have really cute little pictures on them, Very important. LOL.) Then I switched to Huggies and I haven't looked back.

(Melissa is my sister-in-law by the way. She had to use pampers swaddlers, cause I sent her a pack in the mail when they thought her baby would come REALLY early. He only came a little early in the end, Valentines Day actually...)

Oh and one tiny little thing... Are you planning on breast feeding? Cause if you are I have some bad (but not too bad) news for you. I didn't feel like myself again till I was done nursing. Actually, a better way of saying that would be, I didn't feel like my body was mine again till after I finished nursing. You will feel more like yourself though... Just not like you belong to yourself.

I think its normal to want to be "your old self" towards the end of a pregnancy. Im longing for that already and I'm only 32 weeks. I love being pregnant... but the idea of gaining a pound a week... and not sleeping like you use to (due to the discomfort of pregnancy towards the end) makes me want to be "not pregnant" again haha...
Although then I wont sleep due to the newborn being awake haha...

Any how.
It takes some time to get back into shape. Age and your own metabolism will have a lot to do with it.

I was able to get back into pre-pregnancy clothes within a month or so of having Caleb... but you have to remember... I was only 21 (had just turned 21).
So it was easier for me.

Okay diapers...
hmm...
Well you know as a newborn Caleb used the expensive ones (Swaddlers by Pampers or Huggies)... Mainly because thats what people got us at our Baby Showers.

Im not at all against generic ones... but to be perfectly honest... I buy name brand diapers more often than generic these days.
Just because they are built better... and they last longer.

Caleb wets right through generic cheap brands... and it leaves these nasty beads on his skin if it gets to full.
Pampers or Huggies never did that.

So the brands I recommend-

1) Pampers Baby Dry
2) Huggies (any kind)
4) Luvs (this is a very nice generic brand.. smells like baby powder as well!)

When your baby is little though and your changing his or her butt every 2 hours or so haha ... using the cheap brand would be just fine.

Oh and I recommend buying big packs of diapers. Like the BOX packs that come with 100 diapers or more. It saves money.
Buying the small packs here and there ends up costing more.

Buy whatever is on sale :-)
And remember. Any time you buy a pampers back of diapers you get a 2 dollar off coupon for your next purchase :-) thats always cool!

1800diapers.com << has diapers as well

*Reminder newborns wont stay in "NEWBORN SIZE" but a few weeks... unless he or she is a premie... I used 1's for a good while... but 2's and 3's longer.. Calebs been in size 4's since he was around 1 yr. old*

How about cloth? I LOVE using cloth on my little dude's tushie. Of course, we didn't when he was born since he was too little for most of them, but we did use cloth sporadically until he outgrew Pampers Swaddlers. I LOVED those.

We use sposies at night for Jake since he is a heavy wetter. I have Pampers right now though and HATE them. They're not the Pampers Cruisers which were great but baby dry or something. They smell horrible and you can't tell if baby is poopy cause it's masked by the perfumy smell. Like Huggies a lot better.

But, if you want to give cloth a try, I have tried many different kinds and can recommend some to try too!

And I only know dipes for boys - sorry :)

I used pampers swaddlers for as long as Chloe fit them. They're wonderful. Then I switched to huggies supreme. The pampers didn't have the back leak guard which resulted in diapers exploding up her back and all over her clothes. Now we use the costco brand. They're the same as the huggies supreme but cheaper. We also use the costco wipes. They're in the refill packages, but they actually have a plastic lid so you don't have to worry about the plastic flap losing its stickiness. You also don't have to worry about hauling around a big plastic tub or keeping one of the little ones contantly filled.

We used Pampers Swaddlers (loved them!) and then we switched to Pampers Cruisers. Now I just use the Walmart brand and I find them to be just as good as Pampers. But I have friends that don't like them. So it is really is up to you. You will find out what you like and dislike. We are in potty training mode so let's hope we get rid of those diapers well at least until the new baby comes in February!

Wow, there are a lot of diaper opinions. I think you really have to try a few kinds to find out what works best for YOUR baby. Hailey wears the Costco brand diapers and we have NEVER EVER had a problem with wetting through or anything....and with Pampers Cruisers she did. I guess it's different for everyone!

If you use Pampers, there are codes on the inside of the packages that you can enter on their website and save points towards free stuff.

I linked here through my cousin Jer's blog and have enjoyed reading yours the last little while since I too just had a baby boy 3 months ago. Sorry for not commenting sooner, but I always think it's sort of awkward to read a strangers comment.

But having just been on a diaper quest myself I figured I'd weigh in on this one. The only advice I have is DO NOT buy huge boxes of diapers UNTIL you find one that works for you. My in-laws bought us a box of 208 Huggies and my son leaked through each and every one of them which is not pretty in the first month of BM's. It might cost you a little more to buy a smaller amount but in the long run could save you a lot of potential messes.

As for being overdue, although every pregnancy is different, I think all women go through the same feelings right at the end. I too prayed not to be overdue and wound up delivering 10 days late. I decided next time I'm going to pray to be overdue in the hopes of being early ... I figure a little reverse psychology never hurt a baby ;)

Kamryn reacted pretty badly to any of the "cheaper" versions of diapers when she was younger. I tried both Pampers & Huggies. but we both couldn't stomach the smell of a wet Huggies diaper. So, we've stuck with Pampers.
THough now that we are potty training, we are buying the cheap diapers so that she's not as comfortable. isn't that mean? :)

Wow! There sure are a lot of different baby stories! Here's mine:
As far as wanting to just "be me" again, I totally remember that feeling. For me it was just like Becky said, I didn't feel like I was me until I quit nursing. I did, however, fit back into my clothes in the first week after Rowan was born.

As for diapers, NOTHING was good enough for Rowan in the first 5-6 months. Pampers was the best option, but still not great. He would literally have explosions of poop! I washed so much laundry! Thank goodness for Shout! Now I use Superstore diapers during the day, and Huggies for night. The generic brands definately do not hold as much as the name brands do. A handy tip that someone shared with me was to buy one size bigger diapers for nighttime, at least once the baby sleeps through the night. I do this, and I still change the sheets a few times a week due to leaks! I find that I go through about a box full of diapers a month, give or take. If you buy name brand, that's about $38 a month. If you buy generic, it's more like $30. Over a year, that's about $90 difference!!

Basically, you just have to try them all, and decide which works for you. Being a young couple, we don't have a lot of money, so I try really hard to buy generic, even when I really would prefer to use the more expensive diapers.

I sure wish I would have been blogging when I was pregnant! You get so much real life advice!

I'm going to give Teri a bit of support here - she got me going on cloth with our second (once we had a washer) and I was really pleased with it. Not all fun of course but putting soft fabric on your baby instead of petrochemical beads feels nice. We never did get cloth to work at night though. I wasn't willing to have ANY extra wakeups for wetness. Superstore brand worked fine but we never tried fancy ones.

This reminds me how tired I got of people asking me when I was pregnant "so, have you decided about diapers yet?". You however are wise enough to ask for the advice, which is quite different.

Hi, I found your blog through my cousin Kim funk, then Janelle(I think). I would have to say that I don't normally comment on strangers blogs, but I'm also pregnant with my second baby, so I thought why not? haha As far as being you again after the baby, I felt back to myself right away! I didn't lose as much weight as I wanted to, but was in my pre-prego clothes in about 3-4 weeks, they didn't fit as nicely, but I got them on! lol I would have to say that I never did lose the weight that I wanted to, a lot being because I had to stop breastfeeding. Believe it or not, my doctor put me on birth control when my son was about 2 months. My milk dried up immedietly, so I had to stop. That was sad for me because I know I was losing weight as I was nursing. Now with the second one I know I'll lose a lot more because I will for sure keep nursing for a while, and I'll have my 16 month old to run after!
As far as diapers go, we used Huugies newborn when our son was first born, I think I went through about 3-4 packs of those, then went to size 1. I didn't like Pmapers at the size because they always leaked for me...during the nite and day. Also I tried Superstore brand, they were so terrible I didn't even finish the pack! I have heard that Costco brand "Kirkland" is made by huggies, and I know people that swear by them. I think out of all the diapers out there, Huggies are the most $$$ because they never send out coupons. Pampers on the other hand does, you can get their coupons just about anywhere! If it all came down to it, Huggies are my fav (I still use them and will use them for the next one), but if I had to I would use Pampers (they just aren't as stretchy).
The cheapest place to buy diapers (here in Sask. anyway!)is Wal-Mart. And I suggest buying them in boxes as well. You can't buy newborn's in boxes, but everything after size 1 you can. The next cheapest is Costco, they sell Huggies by the box, and work out to a lot cheaper than anywhere! We just don't have a Costco membership so we can't buy them from there.
I know that someone else commented about buying diapers 1 sizr too big for nite time...I definitly disagree! We did that because we had to one nite (our son decided to go on a pee/poop rampage and needed to be changed so much that day)and he kept waking up during the nite because the diapers were leaking.
I know you have soooo many comments about this, and really you just have to try all kinds of things till you find one that works! Every baby is different, as well as us moms! Sometimes it comes down to our preference...and that's ok!
Anyway, I think this is the longest post in history!! I hope I helped a bit! (Not like you didn't have enough advice already)
God Bless!

I'm not sure what I'll use. My mom used cloth because both my sister and I couldn't handle the other kinds.

All the best in this next week then as you wait. I hope that you don't go overdue. Did your Dr. say if you dialated any more?

Wow girls - thank you SO much for your diaper thoughts. And I love all the new comers to my comments box too. I've received some diapers from friends and family, so I have a small stash of both Pampers and Huggies - so we'll see which one works out best. I also have several coupons from both, so we can save a few bucks with that too.

As far as going with cloth, I love the concept - but just don't think I am the girl to make it work. I've done some calculations, and I don't know that it will make a huge difference money-wise. I think that the difference money-wise will be worth the convenience for me. I was also allergic to my own urine as a baby, and my mom had to put me in disposable diapers after getting all ready (and hand-hemming) all the cloth diapers.

Again, thanks for the advice. I think I will definately try all the options before making a final diaper decision. It's funny that people actually ask about that, hey Tan?

By the way, where can you get those little mini travel cases for wipes? I keep thinking I'll just have to use a Ziplock baggy!

Stacey said...

You can buy those travel cases at Wal-Mart, individually, or sometimes they come as a 'bonus' with bigger packages of wipes. That's another issue in itself... what kind of wipes to buy! I've always stuck with the very gentle aloe or newborn wipes. I have very sensitive skin, and any kind of fragrance is not good for me... so since I'm the one changing all the diapers around here, it has to work for me!!

By the way, did you sign up for all of the free programs online like Pampers, Huggies, Enfamil, Similac, Nestle, etc? You can get a lot of coupons and free things from these companies. Just make sure you get the Canadian site. I still get Huggies and Pampers coupons in the mail every few months. It's great! I also got two or three free cans of formula in the mail, and lot's of coupons for that as well.

Becky said...

If you sign up at nestle
you get a free diaper bag! It comes with one of those plastic travelling cases, an icepack, some formula, a bottle, and a really nice big change pad. It's a snazzy black packpack with a little pink heart on it! (I think I spelt backpack wrong.) I hardly got any junkmail from them either. ;)

Oh yeah... And I get Huggies coupons all the time, even more than Pampers. Yorkton must be in some weird diaper twighlight zone. (I think I spelt twighlight wrong.)

Hi, Heather. I've never commented on your blog before, but I came across it via a friend's blog roll, and I've been waiting along with you for the arrival of your baby. How exciting! Anyways, I wanted to comment about the diapers. My boys could only wear Huggies without a rash developing, so that's what I used. I did try some of the other more "generic" brands, but in the end I was happy to pay a couple of extra dollars and have my boys happy due to the fact that the Huggies diapers didn't cause an awful rash on them, and also because there was minimal leakage. Hope all goes well with your delivery!

In Saskatchewan, when you're in the hospital you get this huge bag of crap to look through...it includes all sorts of pamphlets, coupons, samples, and a free pampers travel case for your wipes. I'm not sure if things are different where you're from but that's where I got mine! You can also get them at Buck-or-Two! They have some sort of design or whatever on them, so if you're not about havin' the name brand, they are only $2.
As far as wipes I have used a few different kinds, but I go back to Huggies all the time! They seem to be the wettest ones. When you're wiping that sticky black poop off your new babies butt, dry wipes just won't do! Right now I'm using Huggies with Shea Butter, they are sented very nicely and it helps disguise the poop smell! haha
And just one more thing, I have tried pampers wipes, and did not like them at all! They were very dry and don't really work. Wal-Mart Brand (not Parents Choise, but the Equate)wipes seem to be fairly good as well. I have just had coupons for huggies, so that's y I've been using them, but I think "Equate" are just as good!
Hope it helps! Good luck with the labour!
P.s. are you wanting to do it natural, or epidural? check out my blog, and you can leave me comments there too!
