Okay, so the latest craze in baby gear seems to be the new Halo Sleep Sack. As you can see in the picture, it's basically like a sleeping bag with arm holes and a neck hole. This latest piece of work is supposed to dramatically decrease SIDS, keep the baby the right temperature, won't cover the baby's head like a blanket, and won't slip off, etc. Is this really the God-sent invention for parents, such that they never lose another wink of sleep worrying about SIDS? Or is it simply another way for the baby gear folks to make a buck, while playing with our sensitive need to protect our children as they slumber? I'd love to get some opinions on this one. What did you do for your baby? The light draping of the blanket over top? No blanket? A tight swaddle? Let's hear it ladies... this up and coming momma wants some insight.

I have one of those sleep sacks. I dont think mines the "halo" sleep sack. It looks exactly like that though. Same color even lol. I even have one that is long sleeves w/ just the neck part open... for chillier nights.

But is it needed?
I dont think so.
I liked it because we didnt have heat for a long time and for a while our house in NC was like 59 degrees at night lol. Im not even kidding. Caleb was 4 mo. old.
So I'd put thick PJS on Caleb , plus that overtop. I even had one that was LONG sleeves with just a hole for the head.
Caleb also did tend to pull blankets over top of his head at night as a baby (like from 4 mo. on).
So that did help because he'd wake up fighting the blanket.
I eventually did start using a knitted blanket to cover him with... but it had huge holes in it so he was able to breathe through it and pull it off him if needed... plus it was small.
To this day though he carries that blankie around ;-) its his bestest friend haha.
I think its great to have one of those Halo sacks. But dont spend an arm and a leg ;-) walmart sells them for like 8 bucks!
There are so many thing out there that are completely unnessesary. They reel poor first time moms in with all these reasons why you'd be a terrible mother if you didn't buy your baby one. They're everywhere, and I think this little blanket is one of them. It's not to say that these things are worthless, and you're stupid to buy one, alot of them are very cool, but it's dumb that they make people feel like you "need" them, when you really don't. Especially first time moms, they have no idea what they need, and are feeling overwhelmed as it is, the last thing they need is all this extra pressure to buy the best things and have all the latest fads (when fads is all they are).
I figure, with everything, if you like it, and it works, go with it! If you don't like it, and it doesn't work, screw it, and get on with being a great mom. You don't need any of the latest gadjets to be better or have a better child, although that's exactly how they make us feel.
When my little one was a baby, she loved being swaddled. I swaddled her all the time until she was big enough to break free. I'm of course going to try this with this baby, just cuz I don't know if there's anything cuter than a swaddled baby, but maybe this one won't like it, we'll see....
I'm so long winded all the time, I always get to the end of my comments and think, holy, she must hate having to read through these all the time. LOL!
The little blanket or whatever you call it looks real cute though! I love the little sleepers that have no feet, it looks like one of those.
Heather: Don't stress yourself over what else to buy. This is your first born. Sit back and wait till it's here. You'll have everything you need. If you have a diaper bag,bath towel [2] washcloths, diapers, diaper shirts, sleepers, lotion, baby soap, a coupe blankets, socks, you're ok. Don't worry about the rest of the stuff it'll all come in time You'll see what else you need [or want] after baby is born and your more sure of yourself. Babies got a crib a firm mattress. Hopefully a pad on top of the mattress then a sheet and put baby on top and stop worrying! You'll be just fine! SID happens mostly in bottle fed babies and preemies anyhow.If God wants your precious one to live, It'll live! You just try to enjoy it and treasure it and be thankful for it. Don't stress yourself over what else you need. You're good to go!! I bought whatever else I didn't get as baby gifts and needed, a couple weeks after baby was born. A bath tub to bathe babe in is also a good idea to have before hand. But I'm sure you have all the important stuff.
I always swaddled Kalia and that way, since she was on top of the blanket too, she couldn't even get it over her face, and another thing is that if the baby does get too warm they can't even kick their blanket off. Each to his own though.
I swaddled Kamryn until she didn't want to be anymore...now I can't keep her under a blanket! she moves around so much. I have one of those blanket things too...because in the winter it does get super cold. But I think your baby will still be small enough during the coldest months to be swaddled.
and if we all worried about SIDS all the time, we would never sleep. SIDS happens mostly when the babies are TOO hot, or they've come from a smoke filled home. It's just a fact of life, and it's true that we couldn't stop it if we tried. God has His plans...and we can just pray for safety over our children. That's the best we can do.
Have you ever heard of an Angel Care Moniter? I bought one so that I wouldn't have to worry about SIDS. If baby stops breathing a little alarm goes off to startle babe to breath again. It was a little expensive but helped put my mind at ease.
I swaddled Ella till she didn't want to be swaddled anymore.
